RECAP: Literacy & Numeracy (January)

We recap the first installment of our new literacy program

We traveled back to the bundok last month for the launch of our Literacy & Numeracy program held at our new Mountain View Free Learning Center.

The program is led by experienced Department of Education (DepEd) Philippines teachers and offers basic reading, writing, and math lessons for the kids in Sitio Culasisi. Sitio Culasisi is a mountain community located in Antipolo, Rizal, just outside of Metro Manila.

Because Sitio Culasisi is located in a remote and isolated mountain area, many of the kids in the community are unable to attend school due to the distance and high cost of transportation.

The kids were split into three different groups according to age and reading level and were really eager to learn from the teachers.

Bigay Puso founder and teacher Shirley E. Alambra led the youngest group of kids, ranging from ages 4 to 7. They were taught basic reading, beginning with practicing the letters of the alphabet using English and Filipino words.

Teacher Jeanette also taught basic reading to the older group of kids, who insisted on singing songs as a group afterwards.

Teacher Pierre had her students practice basic math and reading comprehension.

After the lessons, the kids were given fresh fruits and snacks as part of our feeding program.

To support the Literacy & Numeracy program as well as our Mountain View Free Learning Center, shop our collaboration with Tropa or make a direct donation. Our first development projects for the learning center will include a restroom facility and a mini-library. Any amount makes a huge difference in the lives of these children.

The cost to sponsor our Literacy & Numeracy program for one month is US $30 or PHP 1500. If you or your organization would like to partner with us by sponsoring next month's program, please message us or send us an email at info@bigaypuso.org.
