RECAP: Typhoon Carina Relief Drive

Bigay Puso returns to one of its communities to provide support after Typhoon Carina

Many communities in the Philippines are still recovering from the devastating effects of Typhoon Carina.

Last month, Habagat (local name for the Southwest Monsoon), Tropical Depression Butchoy, and Typhoon Carina brought heavy rains across the Philippines, which led to massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

By July 23, 2024, Typhoon Carina had caused significant disruptions, including flight cancellations, suspended classes, flooding, landslides, and traffic jams. Classes in all levels and several local government units were suspended in some areas of Luzon, including Metro Manila, due to the storm. Several commercial flights were also cancelled at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), as well as flights in Basco, Cagayan, and Tuguegarao. By the next day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) upgraded Carina to a super typhoon, with winds of 185 kph and gusts up to 230 kph, leading to over 100 flight cancellations at NAIA. PAGASA also reported that La Mesa Dam had overflowed, prompting flood alerts for Rizal, Quezon City, Valenzuela, and Malabon. The Metro Manila Council then declared a state of calamity in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Kasiglahan Village in Rodriguez, Rizal is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its proximity to the Marikina River in the south and the Puray River in the east. We previously visited Kasiglahan Village when we conducted our last relief drive in coordination with the local barangay officials afer Typhoon Ulysses in 2020.

This past weekend, Bigay Puso conducted another relief drive for 100 families affected by Typhoon Carina in the Kasiglahan Village community.

We are thankful to everyone who continues to support our organization in doing our small part to provide any assistance we can to our kababayan <3
